Google fires programmer who called AI chatbot sentient

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Friday that it fired a senior software engineer who said that the company's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot LaMDA was a self-aware person.

Last month, Google put software engineer Blake Lemoine on leave because he broke company rules and because his claims about LaMDA were "wholly unfounded."

In an email to Reuters, a Google spokesperson said, "It's unfortunate that Blake chose to keep breaking clear employment and data security policies

, which include the need to keep product information safe, even though we talked about this for a long time."

Google and many of the world's top scientists were quick to say that Lemoine's ideas were wrong.

They said that LaMDA is just a complicated algorithm that is designed to make convincing human language.
