Bowl contests. However, the 50-year-old has challenges this summer as a result of future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement and appears certain to announce veteran Mitchell Trubisky as his next starter and Roethlisberger’s replacement.

Prior to the next season, Pro Football Network ranked Tomlin as the third-best head coach in the NFL back in June. Weeks later, Tomlin was ranked fourth among head coaches in a CBS Sports article. The ranking of the former Super Bowl champion coach by Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer as of Saturday’s preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks may therefore come as a surprise to some Steelers supporters.

On Iyer’s list, John Harbaugh of the division foe Baltimore Ravens is listed sixth, right above Tomlin.

Tomlin’s calling card is never having a team finish with a losing record, according to Iyer. He also has the ring to match his friendly division rival Harbaugh. “He has also employed a solid defensive strategy with players who can succeed in it. With the post-Ben Roethlisberger offensive transition, he ought to soon get back on track.”

Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams, the current Super Bowl champion, is ranked first in Iyer’s list. Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, is second, followed by Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur, Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots, and Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers.
