You probably won’t be eating the healthiest meal if you eat at the drive-through. But there’s still hope if you’re going to Chick-fil-A.

It can be difficult to learn how to read fast food menus, but it is possible to find options and make healthy choices at Chick-fil-A, according to registered dietitian Amber Pankonin, MS, RD, who also runs the food blog Stirlist. “As a chef and qualified nutritionist, I advise people to start with something they enjoy and make changes from there. Finding foods that taste nice and provide nutrients like fiber and protein while containing little sodium is a great place to start.”

What should you get at Chick-fil-A to make a healthy choice? “If you’re searching for a low-calorie, protein-packed meal, I recommend pairing the Grilled Nuggets (8 or 12-count) with the Kale Crunch side salad,” advises Pankonin. The nutrients are broken down as follows:

PER 8-count, Grilled Nuggets: 25 g protein, 1 g carb (0 g fiber, 1 g sugar), 3 g fat (0.5 g saturated fat), 85 mg cholesterol, 440 mg salt, and 130 calories per 12-count: 200 calories, 1 g of saturated fat, 4.5 g of total fat, 130 mg of cholesterol, 660 mg of sodium, 2 g of sugar, and 38 g of protein.

PER salad, kale crunch: 120 calories, 9 g of fat (1 g saturated), 0 mg of cholesterol, 140 mg of sodium, 8 g of carbohydrates (2 g of fiber, 3 g of sugar), and 3 g of protein.

One of the healthiest pairings on the menu, according to Pankonin, is the grilled nuggets with the kale crunch side salad. “Its low calorie content and high protein content will help you feel fuller for longer. Vitamin K, calcium, and potassium are just a few of the vitamins and minerals that are abundant in it.”

She also enjoys how little sodium there is in the mixture (560 milligrams), making it a healthy choice for people with high blood pressure.
