ESPN insider on suspended Browns QB Deshaun Watson playing in preseason: ‘What’s the point?’

Until further notice, Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will get the start for Friday’s preseason opener at the Jacksonville Jaguars over backup Jacoby Brissett.

Watson, which leaves him free to participate in training camp and preseason games.

Watson would make his Browns debut on Oct. 23 against the Ravens, a divisional opponent, if Robinson’s ruling stands. Given this fact, at least one analyst has advocated strongly for benching Watson for the duration of the preseason.

Former player and current ESPN personality Damien Woody argued against Watson facing any live defenses this month on Thursday’s “Get Up” show.

“Really, what’s the point? Why even have Deshaun Watson suit up for the preseason games? “Oh, I’m going to play him so that he’ll be ready to play in Week 7?” To me, that makes zero sense, considering that you need to prepare Jacoby Brissett, your backup quarterback “As Woody elaborated,

Below Watson on the Browns’ depth chart are veterans Joshua Dobbs and former first-round pick Josh Rosen.

Furthermore, “we know in this league, all it takes is one hit… so the third-string quarterback needs to get reps just in case some type of injury happens to Jacoby Brissett,” Woody explained. An NFL player said of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, “I know (Watson) is the new shiny toy with the Cleveland Browns, but to me, it just doesn’t make any sense to have him out there.” On Thursday, the Browns were reportedly linked to Jimmy Garoppolo, a veteran quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, but only if Watson’s suspension is “significantly increased” from six games.
