WESTMINSTER, Pa. (AP) — In the upcoming Davis Cup group stage match against Novak Djokovic’s Serbia next month, Carlos Alcaraz will be leading the Spanish team after Rafael Nadal was left off the roster.

After withdrawing from Wimbledon in the quarterfinals with an abdominal injury, Nadal will make his return to competition at this week’s hard-court tournament in Cincinnati.

It also prevented him from competing in Montreal this month, which was a hard-court tuneup for the U.S. Open that starts on August 29.

Valencia is one of four European cities hosting the group stage from September 13-18, and features matches involving Spain and Serbia as well as Canada and South Korea. There’s also Hamburg and Glasgow and Bologna.

Andy Murray, a former world No. 1, has been named to the British team that will compete against the United States, Kazakhstan, and the Netherlands in Scotland. This will be Murray’s first tournament appearance since 2019.

Despite having surgery in June to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle, world No. 2 Alexander Zverev will lead Germany in their Hamburg match against France, Belgium, and Australia.

U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic will captain Croatia in their match against Italy, Argentina, and Sweden in Bologna.

On November 22-27, the final eight teams will be determined in Malaga, Spain, based on the results of the group stage.
