Rep. Liz Cheney, who is heavily favored to lose next week’s Republican primary, has released a final message video in which she frames the upcoming election as part of a larger battle for the soul of the country.
Cheney, a Republican from Wyoming, has made it clear that she plans to run for president in 2024, regardless of the outcome of this election. In private, her friends and family haven’t done anything to dispel speculation that she will. In addition, she did not provide any concrete hints about her future plans, despite the fact that her video message mentioned a long fight being necessary to reject the “poisonous lies” of former President Trump regarding the 2020 election.
However, Cheney did discuss a cause that she claimed could bring together Democrats, Republicans, and independents. This indicates her commitment to leading a non-ideological, cross-national effort.
If we give up the truth, America will cease to be a free nation. It is a pernicious lie to suggest that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulently altered. It exploits people who have patriotic feelings. Cheney argued that Donald Trump had opened the way for manipulation of the American people to the point where they would give up their principles, their freedom, their defense of violence, and their respect for the rule of law.
She argued that this “cannot be the future of our nation,” but that it is “Donald Trump’s legacy.”
If we fail to call out these falsehoods and bring those responsible to justice, we will be normalizing their use in future elections. What she said changed the course of American history forever.
On Tuesday, Cheney faces a Republican primary opponent who has shown fealty to Trump and his baseless claims of a rigged election in 2020, and recent polls show she is likely to lose by double-digit margins.
That challenger, Republican Harriet Hageman, is widely predicted to win the Wyoming primary and go on to defeat the incumbent in the general election.
After Trump’s central role in inciting an assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Cheney has been saying for over a year that she is determined to prevent him from becoming president for a second time.
After that, she became the most senior Republican on the special committee looking into January 6. The findings of the panel show that Trump and his allies planned and orchestrated much of what happened on January 6.
If Cheney loses to Hageman, she will be pressed on her future plans, including any potential runs for higher office.
