Analysis of the upcoming AFC West games

The Chiefs are slight favorites over the Chargers at SI Sportsbook.

SI Sportsbook gives the Chiefs a small edge over the Chargers as the AFC West champions.

SI Sportsbook’s over/under wins totals and division odds have the Chiefs (10.5 wins, +160) and the Chargers (10.5 wins, +240) tied for first place in the AFC West. In addition to the Chiefs, the Broncos (9.5 wins, +260) and the Raiders (8.5 wins, +650) are predicted to finish with winning records, placing them within striking distance of a division crown.

The Chiefs dealt away game-changing wideout Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins, leaving Patrick Mahomes with an aged top tight end in Travis Kelce and dubious wideout depth. Furthermore, since since Kareem Hunt forced his way out of town, Kansas City’s running game hasn’t been the same. Last but not least, the Chiefs’ defense needs to rebuild their secondary and faces a potential negative risk when it comes to stopping the run.

For the AFC East, the over/under on wins is Buffalo/New England/Miami/New York Jets/New York Giants/Dallas/Philadelphia/Washington/New York Giants; for the AFC South, it’s Tennessee/Indiana/Houston/Jacksonville/Tampa Bay/Tulsa/New Orleans/Atlanta/Carolina/Denver/Kansas City; for the NFC South,

Unless many players on offense and defense make substantial improvements this upcoming season, Kansas City cannot rely on its offensive personnel to outscore its division opponents. While their coaching staff gives them an advantage, Mahomes is no longer a cut above the other quarterbacks in the AFC West.

The Broncos’ fourth quarter has been without magic for over a decade, but that has changed with the addition of Russell Wilson. With Wilson at quarterback, their young running back and two wideouts should make significant strides. Bradley Chubb, a defensive end, Patrick Surtain, and Justin Simmons, a safety, are the three stars of their defense. Denver must get better against the run and reduce the passing window for opposing quarterbacks if it wants to move ahead in the division standings.

When wide receiver Davante Adams was signed by the Vegas franchise during the offseason, the city’s profile skyrocketed. With Amari Cooper, Andre Roberts, and Amari Cooper as his new receiving options, Derek Carr is in a great position to take his game to the next level. The duo of Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones will create havoc for the quarterback as pass rushers. The Raiders might not have the personnel to effectively defend against the league’s best passers if they don’t improve their pass defense.

One could argue that their defense is in near-first place. When facing offenses that rely heavily on the run, Las Vegas often finds itself on the receiving end of bullying.

With quarterback Justin Herbert, running back Austin Ekeler, and wideouts Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, the Chargers have a competitive edge in their division. I think they’re headed in the right path with their offensive line, and I’m glad they added linebacker Khalil Mack and cornerback J.C. Jackson to shore up their defense. Their inability to stop the opposing team from running the ball was their chink in the armor in 2021.

Betting on a division champion requires a thorough awareness of the trajectory and potential of each team, as well as the identification of weaknesses in the odds.

The Chargers appear to be the finest all-around club in the division. They appear ready to dethrone the Chiefs, but they can’t afford to lose any offensive players on Sundays because every team is going for the knockout.

While Las Vegas is a thrill trip, I’ll take my (+240) win with the AFC West’s new QB sheriff any day.

Chargers (+240) are the best value bet.
