5 Western Fashion Pieces You Can Wear Anywhere

Unleash your inner horse girl with Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant, and more.

Western wear befitting a Shania Twain music video: cowboy boots, prairie dresses, and fringe jackets. Designers tend to reintroduce Western styles every few seasons.

For the upcoming fall of 2022, the rodeo-wear trend with a fashionable twist will be back. Several designers have put their own spin on traditional Western wear, including Isabel Marant with her suede boots and floral dresses, Saint Laurent with his jackets suitable for a ranch in the Rocky Mountains, and ba&sh, Re/Done, and Nili Lotan with their denim button-downs. Furthermore, Hollywood has helped propel the most recent Western fashion cycle (and no, we’re not talking about Yellowstone costumes).

According to Noelle Sciacca, senior fashion lead at The RealReal, who spoke with about celebrity street style trends, “Western boots with easy dresses” were a common sight in the spring and summer of 2017. Dua Lipa was seen in Lisbon, Portugal this June 2022 wearing them with a mini dress, so clearly the trend has continued into summer 2022. The month before, we saw Kendall Jenner yell “J ‘Adore Cowboys” from the stands at a rodeo in Wyoming.

Brands predict we’ll be wearing updated versions of the classic cowboy boot this fall as interest in Western styles soars in both vintage and modern retail. (You can verify this by looking at the newcomers at any establishment, from Reformation to Khaite.) “When we look at ready-to-wear, we’re seeing more shoppers looking to adopt Western-influenced fashion,” Sciacca continues. This pattern is anticipated to keep going through 2023. Cowboy boots look great with Nordic knitwear, and at least one Copenhagen Fashion Week show (Ganni) showcased this look for Spring/Summer 2023.

Western clothing is more adaptable than we might think, as evidenced by the success of street style in urban settings. Please find below five categories of Western clothing that can be worn almost anywhere, as well as links to where you can buy the individual items.

Western Shoe

Cowboy boots are the epitome of Western style. There are plenty of people who are having second thoughts about wearing a pointed-toe utility boot this fall, so don’t feel bad. According to Sciacca, “we’re seeing a 48% increase in searches for western and riding boots this first half of this year compared to last.” The boot’s newfound adaptability is part of its allure. You can see them paired with everything from tailored dresses to athletic separates and vintage denim on the feet of editors, stylists, and influencers on the street.

Which store do you recommend to find the ideal footwear? In case you were wondering, Lucchese is one of the most sought-after labels on The RealReal. There are also Western wear specialists like Miron Crosby (for high-end, one-of-a-kind boots) and Boot Barn (for an authentic assortment used by the ranchers and rodeo queens of today).

The Fringe Jacket

‘Fringe was a major trend on the Spring/Summer ’22 runways at shows like Chlo√©, Proenza Schouler, and Jonathan Simkhai, and it continued for the Fall/Winter ’22 Bottega Veneta, J.W. Anderson, and Khaite shows,’ Sciacca reveals. The high fashion trend of adding Western-style fringe has sparked interest in vintage interpretations. On The RealReal, fringed tops and dresses saw a 42% increase in pageviews during the first half of 2022. Up top, you can see a variety of Western-inspired, wearable outerwear made from materials like suede, felt, and wool, including a vintage take on the style from cult favorite Miu Miu.

Authentic Cowboy Jeans

Denim is a necessary component of any homage to Western style. While modern consumers may not put their jeans to the same hard labor as their forebears, we still value the classic style and long life of a well-made boot cut or straight leg. If you want to go all out for the Western style, wear a huge belt.

Garb Associated with the West

The prairie dress is practically synonymous with this style, which features voluminous skirts with multiple layers, floral patterns (whether embroidered or printed), and earthy tones. If you’d rather avoid the puff-sleeve trend this season, try a thin-strapped dress in a dark floral or denim fabric, and pair it with a smooth turtleneck for added warmth.

Western Wear: The Shirt

This season’s Western shirts on the market aren’t your average button-downs. Denim is ubiquitous this season, and designers like Nili Lotan and Maison Margiela are paying homage to classic ranch wear with chain-stitched details. Find a brass studded or crystal-embellished version if you want to go in a disco-cowgirl direction that Kacey Musgraves would approve of.
